Their common ancestor was prehistoric Germanic *sūraz, which was related to Lithuanian sūrus ‘salty’ and Old Church Slavonic syru ‘damp, raw’. Sorrel [14] is etymologically the ‘sour’ plant: its Old French source sorele came ultimately from Germanic *sūraz.=> sorrel
